Schools and Colleges
Hello, my name is Debbie Lumsdon and I am the Schools and Colleges Liaison Officer for St Luke’s Hospice. I work with all schools and colleges within the catchment area of the Hospice raising awareness of the work we do in support of life-limited and terminally ill patients, their families and loved ones. Much of my work with schools and colleges links closely with the requirements of the National Curriculum.
What we can do for you?
Let us challenge your perception of what a Hospice is. We are keen to visit schools and colleges to talk about the scope of the work we do at St Luke’s and how it relates to the local community in many ways. We are happy to arrange for children, students and teaching staff to visit the Hospice. Alternatively myself or one of my colleagues can visit you.
We can tailor our presentations to any age group from infants, year 12 students to mature students. We can arrange talks within classes, study groups and assemblies.
We work within the National Curriculum and can be used in the following subject areas:
· Religious Education
· Citizenship
· Philosophy and Ethics
· Personal Development
· General Studies
Volunteering
If you are 16 years of age or over you may be able to volunteer to work at the Hospice.
Education Resource Pack & CD Rom
Help the Hospices have produced an education pack with information for students with age ranges from 11-14 years old. This pack is available free of charge emailing Help the Hospices at
hospicepack@helpthehospices.org.uk
. If you request a pack, please contact us to discuss how we can support you with its delivery to your students.
The benefits of working with the Hospice:
Schools and Hospices are part of the local community.
Talks can meet a specific curriculum need.
Increase self-esteem.
Have fun!!!
An event carried out by a student could be a valuable item in their personal portfolio or cv.
An opportunity for publicity for your school/college in the local media.
Fundraising
Local schools and colleges fundraise for the Hospice and every contribution we receive MAKES A REAL DIFFERENCE. The money raised from schools and colleges through fundraising events provides an important and substantial source of our annual income. There are lots of exciting ways that you can support the Hospice and these are as follows:
. Become a Mini Luker.
. Go Yellow Day In June- Wear Yellow for the Hospice.
. Plymouth Half Marathon Fun Run in May - be one of our Mini Lukers running for . St Luke’s.
. Sponsored Events- challenge your teachers to a sporting event?
. Memory Mile Walk in October.
We can support your efforts in a number of ways:
· Provide lots of fun ideas and advice for events.
· Providing official Hospice sponsorship forms, collecting cans,
Fundraising Ideas
, for your use.
· Sending one of our representatives to talk about our work.
· Attending your event including cheque presentations.
Children Always Remember
· You must get permission from your parents or guardians for any fundraising activity you do.
· Never approach strangers for money.
If you have any questions about our work or would like to discuss ways in which we can help your school or college, please contact Debbie Lumsdon on 01752 492626 ext. 201 or email
