Make a Will
Leaving a gift in your will is a great way to help St Luke’s continue to make a difference to people in our local community, not only now but in the future. Leaving this gift has no financial impact during your life, but will help us to care for patients after your death.
Nearly 25% of our income comes to us from gifts left to us in wills, meaning that the care of every 1 in 4 patients is possible due to a legacy donation.
To support this way of giving we have introduced a free Will Writing Service and we would especially like to thank McClure Solicitors who are giving their time free of charge to update or write Wills, in return for a donation to St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.
It is surprising how many people die without making a Will. This is a great shame because the process of making a will is actually quite straightforward. Your Will tells everyone what should happen to your money, possessions and property after you die (all these things together are called your ‘estate’). If you don’t leave a Will, the law decides how your estate is passed on and this may not be in line with your wishes.
A Will makes it much easier for your family or friends to sort everything out when you die – without a Will the process can be more time consuming and stressful at an already difficult time. If you don’t write a Will, everything you own will be shared out in a standard way defined by the law – which isn’t always the way you might want.
A Will can help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax that may be payable on the value of the property and money you leave behind. Writing a Will is especially important if you have children or family who depend on you financially, or if you want to leave something to people or an organisation outside your immediate family such as St Luke’s.
If you have not already made a Will then we hope that the following information will help you to begin this simple process and ensure that your estate is divided up how you would like it to be.
