Going the extra mile for Albion’s ‘Queen’ Anne: Sam’s tribute at Men’s Day Out

One man is going the extra mile – literally – at our Men’s Day Out next week, to honour Plymouth Albion’s beloved ‘Queen’ – Anne Prue.

Sam Lever, from Plymouth, is the Vice-chairman and interim secretary for Plymouth Albion 200club. On Saturday 14 March he will be walking our Men’s Day Out for the second year running in memory of Anne, who was an avid supporter of St Luke’s and secretary of the 200club.

Rugby is 27-year-old Sam’s passion. Father to three little boys with his partner Abbie, Sam, who works for Brittany Ferries, has been supporting Albion for as long as he can remember, stating it ‘runs in the family’. This was how Sam first became involved with the 200club, a club he now considers family.

So when Sam heard about our Men’s Day Out last year, which includes a 12km walk across Plymouth and finishes with a game of rugby at Albion, it was a no brainer for him, especially as he decided to do it in honour of the 200Club founder, Major (QM) Vincent Bertram Jones.

Sadly, the club secretary, Anne Prue died at the end of last year, so this year Sam will be embarking on the walk again for her, even going the extra mile and hopping on a spin bike when he gets back to Albion after the walk until the final whistle.

“Anne was the ‘Queen’ of Plymouth Albion,” described Sam. “She is remembered for her kindness, warmth and unwavering passion for her family and friends.

“She spent her entire career supporting the NHS in her roles that included mental health wellness support and primary care liaison.

“I wanted to do something in her memory that I know she’d be proud of. St Luke’s was the obvious choice as Anne herself always championed their cause. It’s because of Anne that I understand and realise the amount of work St Luke’s do, not only for patients but family as well.”

Anne was a pillar of the rugby community, a keen supporter of Plymouth Albion, she attended both home and away games along with her husband Reg and sons Robert and Mark.

“Anne was the secretary for the 200Club for many years and her family also members,” continued Sam. “They sponsored many players on behalf of the Prue family and she gave as much as she could to Albion. This is how my family and hers became close friends. Close enough that I consider them all family to me.

“So to Reg, Anne’s husband and Rob and Mark, Anne’s boys this one is for you in honour of the greatest, most incredible women I’ve ever met. May she rest easy, never be forgotten and share love endlessly.”

Registration for Men’s Day Out  is closing soon

Many participants at our Men’s Day Out like Sam, walk in memory of loved ones but, let’s face it, men are masters at masking our emotions, even after losing someone we care deeply about. Sharing our feelings can make a big difference, and Men’s Day Out offers a great opportunity to drop the brave face and open up to others who know what we are going through.

Places for the event – kindly sponsored by JEM Scaffolding Ltd – are going fast, with a limited amount remaining, so make sure to dodge the scrum and sign up quickly. Registration closes at 5pm on Tuesday 10 March.

Registration costs just £35, but that only covers your official Men’s Day Out T-shirt, refreshments, a ticket for the rugby and our event costs. If every walker raised £100 in sponsorship, it would help provide care at home for 300 people and their families.
