Argyle match day with a difference to spotlight local hospice care

Combining football with fundraising

Classic Builders will combine football with fundraising as they gift their front of shirt sponsorship to St Luke’s for Argyle’s Sky Bet Championship match against Derby County on Saturday 15 March.

This generous gesture from one of the city’s premier construction companies means that St Luke’s logo will emblazon the front of Argyle’s famous Green for this very special home match day as all parties aim to raise awareness and funds to make a vital difference to local families when they need it most.

Limited edition St Luke’s shirts

There will be 300 limited edition shirts for Argyle fans to purchase which can be purchased here  but are selling out quickly. These cost £40 for juniors and £50 for adults and all proceeds will go to St Luke’s.

Post-game, the match worn shirts will be signed by the players before being auctioned. The auction will run from Thursday 20 March to Sunday 30 March. We will share links to the auction once it is live on Thursday 20 March.

Shining a light on St Luke’s

Sam Greenfield, Head of Commercial at Plymouth Argyle FC, said: “Classic Builders are keen to use the partnership to give back to the local community who have supported their business for many years.

“We are delighted that they have chosen to shine a light on St Luke’s, a charity close to the hearts of Plymouth Argyle and the thousands of fans who follow us. We are collaborating with Classic Builders and the hospice to make sure it will be a day to remember that does good for our community too.”

Supporting St Luke’s is a privilege

Fred Bennetton, Founding Director of Classic Builders, said: “For me and my Partners – Darren Wills, Adam Brimacombe and Jason Battle – supporting St Luke’s is a privilege given everything the hospice does for our community.

“Their specialist services ensure local people with terminal illness have the comfort and dignity they deserve at the end of their lives, but more than that, they are there for the families too.

“Colleagues and clients tell me about the wonderful support their own families have received from St Luke’s. Such compassionate care is priceless, but at Classic Builders we are aware that what the hospice gives at no cost to its patients does not come cheap to the charity, particularly in this very tough economic climate.

“That’s why we’re using our platform as Argyle shirt sponsor to turn the spotlight on St Luke’s. We hope that in doing so we will not only increase awareness but raise as much money as we can to help keep the hospice team doing what they do so brilliantly for months and years to come.”

Coming together to support St Luke’s

With St Luke’s nurses invited onto the pitch at half-time, and with the charity’s collection buckets circulating, the Home Park crowd will have the opportunity to show its support for St Luke’s.

For Classic Builders Darren Wills, match day will be a poignant reminder of the care the hospice provided for his much-loved mother Sandra before sadly, she died in October 2008.

Darren said: “Mum died 13 months after being diagnosed with lung cancer. She was such a special mum but it comforted me to know her last days were spent in peaceful surroundings at Turnchapel. I witnessed the care St Luke’s gave her and the nurses were amazing. I can’t thank the staff enough for looking after her so well.

“Following the death of my mum we took a break from a difficult IVF journey we’d been on to try to conceive our third child. Imagine our joy – and surprise – when our daughter Erin was conceived naturally just five months after mum passed away! We like to think she was sent to us by mum, who was such a special lady.

“Given how many families St Luke’s touches, I know there will be hundreds at the match who, like me, cherish precious memories of those they have loved and lost. Coming together to support the hospice is a fantastic way to make sure other families don’t miss out on the unwavering support the charity provides to make a really difficult time that bit easier.”

A special tribute in memory

On matchday there will be a special tribute to all the people St Luke’s has looked after over the years. In preparation for this, we are inviting people to send in photos of loved ones whose lives they want to celebrate at the event. As many of these pictures as possible will be displayed on the stadium’s big screen while the crowd joins together in a minutes applause.

For the chance to have your lost loved one’s image included on the big screen, please send your photograph of them including their full name as a direct message on any of St Luke’s social media channels by midnight this Sunday 9 March.

Thank you

Sarah Wallis, Partnership Lead at St Luke’s, said: “All of us at St Luke’s, and especially our nurses, are overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity shown by Classic Builders. They are incredibly passionate about giving back to our charity and are always looking for new ways to support us.

“These funds will make a real difference, helping our team reach more people who desperately need specialist care so they can live well to the end of their lives. A huge thank you to Classic Builders for being such a big-hearted business. We really appreciate it!”

The 300 specially branded shirts are available to purchase here but are selling fast, and we will share details of the auction when it is live across our official channels from Thursday 20 March.

BLOG: You can take the lady out of St Luke’s but not St Luke’s out of the lady

St Luke's Hospice Plymouth has reunited with one of its earliest caring hearts during a surprise visit for this special lady on her 95th birthday. Brixton Venn Court resident Joy Ridley, one of St Luke’s first-ever nursing auxiliaries in the 1980s, was visibly moved when Jess Timbrell, a paramedic with the hospice, arrived with flowers and a birthday card for her this week. Although the two women had never met before, they quickly recognised in each other the same unwavering compassion for families affected by terminal illness.

BLOG: Riding ahead of the pack: Meet Joseph

When 13-year-old Joseph realised that he wouldn’t be able to make it to our Tour de Moor ride on Sunday, he didn’t let disappointment slow him down. Instead, he took on the challenge a week early, determined not to miss out on the event he had been looking forward to all year. Avid bike lover, Joseph Florey, from Sherford, took part in our Tour de Moor with his dad for the first time last year. He loved it so much that he couldn’t wait to do it all over again this year and so signed up as soon as possible. However unfortunately, he is due to undergo an operation just before the big day, meaning he would miss this year’s event. But Joseph was not going to let that stop him from completing the challenge. He got out on his bike at the weekend and battled the weather to ride the 11km route and has raised more than £100 in the process.

BLOG: Mini-Moor, Mighty effort: Five-year-old Lenny rides for St Luke’s

At just five years old, Lenny Harrison from Plympton is gearing up for a challenge that’s bigger than most children his age would dream of - taking part in the 11km Mini-Moor route of our Tour de Moor. Not only that, but he has already raised over £1,300 for St Luke’s and he hasn’t even crossed the start line yet. Lenny, who turned five in April, lives with his mum and dad, Mica and Dan, and his older brother Parker, who’s nine. He has recently discovered a love for cycling that’s taken off in a big way. “Although he’s been great on a balance bike for a while,” says Dan, “he only really became confident on his current bike around April or May this year. But now it’s clicked, we just can’t keep him off it!”
