Winning in memory of Dad

St Luke’s Summer Raffle winner

One man’s lucky win is in memory of his father.

Richard Jenkins is the winner of our top cash prize of £2,000 in our summer raffle.

Originally from Plymouth and now living near Derby with his family, Richard was overjoyed to hear that his ticket was the winning one. The win came as an unexpected surprise, following years of supporting St Luke’s since we cared for his father twelve years ago.

An unexpected surprise

Originally from Plymouth and now living near Derby with his family, Richard was overjoyed to hear that his ticket was the winning one. The win came as an unexpected surprise, following years of supporting St Luke’s since we cared for his father twelve years ago.

“My dad is the reason I like to support St Luke’s and the great work the team do,” he explains. “In August 2011 at the age of 62 my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was at the point in his life where he was looking forward to retirement with my mum and had just invested in a new motorbike.

“He has always been active through his job, lots of DIY and playing sport, he loved his cricket and did some coaching for Plymouth Civil Service. As his health deteriorated, he was very lucky to have a place in St Luke’s where the support and care he received was brilliant.

“In January 2012, we celebrated my mum and dads 40th wedding anniversary, later that month my dad died in St Luke’s, with my mum, sister and I at his side. Since this time, I have supported St Luke’s in any way I can. This has been primarily through buying raffle tickets, with no expectation of winning.

“I was amazed when I was told I had won.”

Having spent seventeen years working in Aerospace for Rolls-Royce and then eleven years working for 3M (best known for masking tape and Post-it notes) Richard was unfortunately made redundant earlier this year, but he says he is now looking for his next adventure. “So winning this raffle has come at a great time with so much uncertainty,” he adds.

Supporting St Luke’s

We run two raffles throughout the year, providing our supporters to be in with a chance of winning cash prizes while supporting our patient care. While our summer raffle has now finished, keep an eye out towards the end of the year for our Christmas raffle for another chance to win. In the meantime, why not play our St Luke’s Lottery?
