A fabulous concert in aid of our compassionate care? That hits all the right notes with us!

We couldn’t be happier to announce the Plymouth Military Wives Choir ‘Celebrate and Reflect’ concert on Friday 10 June in aid of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. Join us at Plymouth Guildhall as we come together for an evening of song, music, celebration and reflection marking 40 years of our specialist service and the 11th anniversary of the talented Plymouth based choir.

With 72 choirs and nearly 2,000 members in British military bases across the UK and overseas, the Military Wives Choirs is a charity that brings all women in the military community closer together and empowers them through singing. The choirs contain wives of serving personnel, but also those currently serving, veterans, mothers, sisters and daughters, and others with a military connection.

Hosted by BBC Radio Devon presenter David Fitzgerald, the anniversary concert will also feature the Newton Abbot Orchestra and treble Jaimie Page. COVID-safety measures will be in place.

Tickets (£12 each) are on sale in St Luke’s charity shops at Western Approach, Tavistock and Modbury, or book online.

What could be better than winning a stunning custom VW T6.1 campervan? To also have the option of donating £500 to a well-deserved charity of your choice!

We’re so touched by the generous gesture of local lady Joanna Davis, who has chosen to give her prize money to our charity in recognition of the vital service we provide for local families going a very difficult time.

Joanna’s dream scenario became reality when she found herself the proud winner of ‘Walter the Wasp’ campervan after trying her luck with Aspire Competitions, a Yeovil-based company which regularly gives away prizes worth tens of thousands of pounds.

Though she never expected to win, Joanna’s name was called out on Aspire Competitions’ live draw, after the 38-year-old professional had let the fact that she had entered slip her mind! Needless to say, that day Joanna became the owner of a camper that succeeded all of her expectations and fell in love with the prospect of freedom and travel entering her life once more.

With every sell-out camper competition, Aspire Competitions donates £500 to a charity of the winner’s choice, giving every participant the knowledge they are donating to a good cause. To date, they have given well over £60,000 to various charities.

For Joanna, there was never any question which charity she wanted to benefit from her win. With a friend working as part of our team, and knowing people who have received our care, she was keen to kindly ensure we received the donation to help our patients. She said: “The support St Luke’s gives to patients and their families is phenomenal.”

“It doesn’t seem that long – I can’t quite believe it!”

They say time flies when you’re enjoying yourself and that is just how Saltash charity shop volunteer Jackie Taylor feels about clocking up an incredible 30 years as part of the store’s hardworking team.

Jackie, who is 80, lives in the town with her husband and has four children and nine grandchildren. Explaining what drew her to volunteer with our charity after moving to Saltash from London, she said: “I had a breast cancer scare and although I turned out to be okay, it got me thinking that one day I might be one of the ones who needs St Luke’s. Also, I’d worked as a nurse in London so there was an affinity there as well.

“I always look forward to my two mornings a week at the shop. I’m happy doing whatever is needed, whether it’s being on the till, steaming clothes and tagging them, or doing the dusting.

“It’s great being part of such a super team.”

“Hayley is a lovely manager, and it’s great being part of such a super team with people who are all so dedicated. I love meeting the customers, too. It’s never about hard selling – they’re there because they want to be, and I enjoy chatting with them as they browse around.

“Of course, being a volunteer all this time I’ve seen lots of changes, including the shop moving from the bottom of the town to the top and back again. What has stayed the same though, is the compassion St Luke’s has for everyone who needs them. It feels good to contribute to a charity that makes such an important difference in the community.”

As part of recognising Jackie’s special milestone, Saltash Shop Manager Hayley Pollard put on a celebratory tea, with Head of Retail Mike Picken and Retail Area Manager John Saunders calling in to say a special thank-you, too.

Hayley said: “Making sure the shop runs smoothly is a real team effort and we couldn’t do it without our volunteers who so kindly give their time and skills. I started as a volunteer myself – on the same day as Jackie in fact, so we’ve known each other a very long time. She’s committed and focussed, and nothing is too much trouble. I can only describe her as a complete superstar!”
