BLOG: St Luke’s makes historic return to Kingsbridge

The doors have opened on St Luke’s latest shop, marking a fresh and exciting era for the charity’s presence in Kingsbridge and a community minded new identity for one of the South Hams town’s landmark buildings.

The ground floor of a distinctive Grade II listed former inn at the bottom of Fore Street has been sensitively refurbished to create an attractive and spacious store. Open seven days a week, 9.30am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays, the new shop is selling pre-loved clothing for women, men and children, shoes and accessories, jewellery, books and bric-a-brac, as well as smaller items of brand new flat-packed furniture, such as tables, chairs and TV stands.

St Luke’s previously ran a popular, but much smaller, outlet at the top of the town for more than 25 years but, sadly, it closed during the Covid pandemic. The new store at the bottom of Fore Street is not only much larger, it has also helped to inject fresh life into a building with a fascinating past and some lovely architectural features.

Research by St Luke’s volunteer and fundraiser Colin Pincombe has revealed that the site started life in the mid-18th century as the Blue Anchor Inn and brewhouse. The eight-bedroom hotel, which boasted a bar, butcher’s shop and stables, was popular with masters of vessels sailing between Kingsbridge, Plymouth and further afield from what was then known as Dodbrooke Quay. Builders carrying out the recent refurbishments discovered clay pipes consistent with those times.

The present three-storey stucco structure dates back to the 1860s, and its exterior was listed for preservation in 1972. The building was modernised and renamed the Quay Hotel by its new owners, Courage Brewery, in the early 1980s and it eventually closed in 2015. Now the building has had a sensitive makeover and houses St Luke’s on the ground floor, complete with original fireplace and 19th century brickwork, with residential accommodation above.

Shop manager Maureen Clarke and assistants Molly Brown, Sarah Hunt and Julie Stephens, who all live in Kingsbridge, are eager to welcome customers and receive quality donated items. Maureen is very experienced in the sector, having previously managed two other charity shops in the town, and she has great connections within the community, including the rugby club and the fantastic annual Ride for Tina event in aid of St Luke’s.

She and her team will be supported by a band of local volunteers and Maureen has already recruited a core of around seven, many of whom have worked with her in the past.

Over the past few months, other St Luke’s shops have been saving and storing items to stock the rails and shelves at Kingsbridge in its first couple of weeks.

“They have been amazing. A lot of the stock we have on display now is designer labels,” said Maureen. “If you have a good-looking shop and a good layout, then you attract good quality donations.”

In addition, she is thrilled that the people and businesses of Kingsbridge and surrounding areas are lining up to help.

“People are saying they are glad that St Luke’s is back in the town. They are happy that we have this building because they know it will provide much needed income for such a good cause. And I’m excited to educate people who don’t know exactly what St Luke’s does and how the money is spent on such important care.”

St Luke’s retail area manager Kerry Hearn said: “We are absolutely delighted to return to Kingsbridge and open a new St Luke’s shop in this wonderful historic space. The town has always supported us so generously in the past and we’re sure people will love the new premises.

“By donating your pre-loved items or shopping for bargains with us you will be supporting the crucial work of St Luke’s expert compassionate teams who are caring for people from the town and surrounding area, 365 days a year, at the most difficult and emotional of times.”

BLOG: A trip to the shops shines a light on St Luke’s amazing volunteers

 

It’s no exaggeration to say that St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth couldn’t deliver its crucial and compassionate end of life care without the support of its army of big-hearted volunteers who give their time and talents for free. This Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) St Luke’s is saluting them all with a huge, heartfelt thank you, and new CEO Christina Quinn has been out and about meeting a few of these very special people in person.

The charity has an amazing 668 regular volunteers – 464 of them in the charity’s shops across Plymouth, West Devon, the South Hams and East Cornwall, sorting donations, steaming and hanging clothing, creating displays and serving customers.

Christina’s whistlestop tour took in three popular stores, where she got a feel for who St Luke’s retail volunteers are and why they choose to do what they do.

She says: “We get so much from the volunteers, but what is lovely is that they all said how much they get from it as well and they have real pride in supporting the vital work of St Luke’s.

“Visiting the Plymstock, Elburton and Transit Way shops it was clear how much the store managers appreciate and value their volunteers, as we all do too. None of us can do this without them.”

During her visits, Christina heard some heartening stories from individual volunteers, each with unique backgrounds and experiences but with the same aim in mind.

Barbara

A volunteer with special niche knowledge can be a real boon to St Luke’s shop managers. Barbara Daniel used to have an antiques shop on the Barbican and she would sometimes come in to St Luke’s to help value jewellery donations.

After she and her husband closed their business, Barbara began volunteering twice a week at our Plymstock shop where she’s now the resident jewellery expert. Using her keen eye, she takes a good look at items when they arrive, spotting anything that could potentially be quite valuable and doing her homework to make sure the price is right to raise as much as possible to support St Luke’s end of life care.

Barbara is delighted to use her expertise and has identified a few choice pieces that have sold for between £400 and £500.

She says: “I think most volunteers feel like it’s a social occasion to come here and meet people. It keeps the brain ticking over as you get older. I certainly missed it during the lockdown.”

Barbara also loves hunting down bargains in St Luke’s shops. When her son got married recently, both she and her daughter found their glamorous outfits for the big day in one of the charity’s stores.

They each discovered almost new dress and jacket ensembles that would originally have cost hundreds of pounds. Of course, generous Barbara donated hers straight back to St Luke’s after she’d worn it!

Julie

Volunteering for St Luke’s is especially poignant for Julie Lukehurst, a recent recruit at the Elburton shop. Hospital doctors told her that her cancer was incurable and that the best thing for her would be palliative care at St Luke’s specialist unit at Turnchapel.

“I was offered a bed but said I wouldn’t be going there because I wasn’t dying,” recalls Julie.  Four years later she is in remission, managing her illness with medication and pacing her energy through good and bad days. “I think it’s fantastic that St Luke’s is there. That’s why I want to give something back.

“I’ve always worked but couldn’t when I was unwell and I missed it. I moved to a little cottage just down the road from the Elburton shop and used to come in as a customer. One day Rachel the manager asked me if I’d like to volunteer.”

Julie is now quickly learning the ropes volunteering twice a week, sorting stock and serving customers, and she’s mastering the till, even though she’s a self-confessed technophobe.

“I get more pleasure out of being here than I do anywhere. Everyone here is so lovely and friendly and we’re all here for the same reason – to make money for care.  But it’s also a social thing. I could easily stay at home seeing nobody,” says Julie.

Darren

Darren King is a carer for his wife, so he’s unable to go into paid employment. But he loves volunteering at St Luke’s Transit Way shop, just five minutes’ walk from home so he can run back if he’s needed. Working in the shop gives him a sense of purpose and a break from being in the house all the time.

“I just love being here. This is my baby, and the people are like family to me, especially Steve, the manager. He makes work a pleasure.

“The satisfaction you get when you put something through the till and you know it’s going to such a good cause is amazing. There’s no better feeling than clearing £1,000 and knowing that will pay for someone to be cared for at home – it’s a goal we all set for ourselves. We all take pride in the store and it’s really rewarding.”

On the day Christina visited Darren was working alongside a team of fellow volunteers including regulars Mel, Pam and Sue, all supervised by manager Steve Evans. He says it takes a minimum of 10 volunteers to help run the large Transit Way clothing shop and the adjacent bric-a-brac store. There’s a constant stream of donated items being brought in by customers, many on their way to the supermarket next door, and they all need checking, sorting and pricing.

Christina was impressed and humbled by her shop visits. She says: “Every single individual makes a unique contribution towards our shared goal to provide the very best holistic care for people with terminal illness at the end of their lives and compassionate support for their loved ones.

“Barbara, Julie and Darren are all doing a fantastic job and it’s so great to know that they enjoy what they do and get satisfaction from knowing they are giving something back.”

St Luke’s is always looking for more volunteers to help in our shops for a few hours or more each week. These are the stores that are currently in urgent need of more helping hands:  Western Approach/Toys ’R’ Us, Shabby Chic on the Barbican, Sugar Mill, Drake and New George Street in the city centre, Plymstock Bookshop, Tavistock and Launceston.

BLOG: Being there was Dr Jeff’s greatest gift

Consultant and former medical director Dr Jeff Stephenson has announced his retirement from St Luke’s after two decades with the hospice. As this important era ends, we asked him what brought him into palliative care, what kept him at St Luke’s and what the future holds.

When he arrived at St Luke’s just over 20 years ago, Dr Jeff Stephenson was stepping up to his first post as a consultant, fresh-faced and full of confidence that he was going to make things better for people who were dying.

As he prepares to say farewell to both St Luke’s and his medical career, it is with the benefit of huge and humbling experience and the knowledge that he doesn’t have all the answers, the smallest things often matter most, and that St Luke’s must keep developing to achieve its aims.

“In all my time here the most valuable thing I have been able to contribute is my presence,” said Jeff. “It’s often not so much what you do, it’s about how you make people feel that is important. The tiniest act can make people feel loved and valued and accepted. Families and patients have been amazed that you spend time and really listen.”

Jeff recalls the daughter of an elderly patient being overwhelmed when he got down on his knees by the bed to talk to her mother.

“I do that a lot, but it took her by surprise. It’s about showing people that they matter, and they are not just another patient to you. And that’s much harder to do in mainstream medicine.”

Originally from County Durham, Jeff had few experiences of people dying when he was at medical school in the late 1980s and early 1990s and there was no specific palliative medicine training at that time. It was a memorable encounter with a friend that first made him think seriously about the final part of the human journey.

“There was a girl training in the year ahead of me who I knew from church. I remember seeing her two or three months into her first job in geriatric care and she was in floods of tears. She said: ‘They just keep dying on me.’ I thought perhaps I ought to get some preparation for that.”

As part of his standard training, Jeff elected to spend several weeks at a hospice in Edinburgh where he found himself working alongside a particularly enlightened and inspirational doctor. “That was the first time I had the thought ‘I would really like to be like you’.”

After qualifying, each new job and element of training took Jeff and his wife, Lois, a primary school teacher, to a different location, gradually moving further south and west. Landing in Exeter to complete his palliative medicine training, Jeff spent time working at St Luke’s and loved it. The couple were also keen to bring up their four children in beautiful Devon, settling in Ivybridge.

“There was a sense of calling to come here,” he said.

Recognising his potential, St Luke’s created a post for Jeff working alongside Dr Mary Nugent, one of the charity’s early pioneers in holistic hospice care. He grasped the challenge and never looked back, devoting his career to the collective vision of a community where no person has to die alone, in pain or in distress.

It hasn’t been an easy mission, but Jeff has been spurred on by his colleagues and the respect he has for them, as well as St Luke’s over-riding culture of compassion for all.

“I have been humbled and inspired by the people I work with and the care I see in action throughout St Luke’s, what the human potential is and how people go the extra mile for others.

“I’ve been privileged to work in an environment where you see incredible love and care being shown and that is what has kept me here.

“I have learned that people can cope with situations you would think would be unbearable and they do it with such strength and courage. No one should have to deal with some of the things my nursing colleagues are dealing with day in and day out. It’s inspiring.”

Over the decades, Jeff has seen many changes, in how services are run as well as the journeys patients take.

“As people live longer there is a lot more comorbidity now. People are living with long term conditions for far longer than they were. Ultimately all people will die, but many will now have more complex problems when end of life is approaching.

“There are so many new treatments coming online. Some of them are very expensive and offering only a few weeks or months of extra life, but people will want to be offered them. There is still a temptation to over-treat when what someone needs is a frank discussion about what is really important to them.

“One of the sadnesses is increasing bureaucracy and that we spend more and more time justifying what we are doing. It feels like we have far less time to be with people on their journey than when we started. People are coming to us later, and sicker, and there are limits to what we can do.”

Jeff has encouraged the focus of St Luke’s care to broaden out from the specialist inpatient unit at Turnchapel and into the community, with the premise that people should be able die comfortably at home surrounded by family and friends if it’s what they want and the right support is there for them. He believes volunteer power and education are vital for a sustainable future.

“We need community engagement to try and get nonprofessional sources of support for people. Going back hundreds of years, the community would gather around to support people going through dying and bereavement. There is still a lot of goodwill, talent and skill out there that could be motivated in looking after our neighbours in this difficult phase and we need to find ways of motivating volunteers.

“I think in terms of changing cultural attitudes to dying and opening up a conversation about dying, young people are the key. There is a tendency to try and hide death from children because we think they cannot cope with it. Actually, as our work in schools shows, when approached in the right way, youngsters are really well able to cope with discussions around mortality. It is the way to go over the next few years – after all, they are our future nurses, doctors and care professionals.”

There has been ongoing debate nationally about whether hospices should be entirely government or NHS funded to ensure everyone has access to the same quality of end of life care. It’s something Jeff would resist.

“Here it is all about the whole person. It is not simply the symptoms. It is all the other stuff around that. That is the advantage of being a hospice and a charity. You could argue that what we offer is essential care and it should be funded entirely by the NHS. But having charitable status gives us freedom in terms of innovation and development. Of course, we would like more funding from the NHS, but we don’t want to give up too much control. One area of development is collaborating a bit more with other hospices in our region, which we have already begun to do.

“When looked at our vision a few years ago we acknowledged that it’s no good having just a few patients getting a Rolls Royce service of excellent quality of care when others are not getting it. What can we do to make sure everyone can have an adequate level of care?

“It is not necessarily about St Luke’s providing that care, which is why education and community engagement is so important, as well as thinking outside the box about how to maintain a sustainable approach to funding. There is a limit to how much a local community can fundraise, which is why we are now looking at business ventures that are going to provide longer term income.”

Jeff did have mixed feelings about retirement, especially after the unsettling effects of the pandemic. But he says he is ready and confident that the medical team is in fine fettle to carry on the incredible work of St Luke’s without him.

“I’ve been a doctor about 30 years and working with the dying for over 20 years. I’m ready to move on, but will be sad to leave this working environment, which has been wonderful.

“The reaction of people to the fact that I’m going soon is probably the most humbling thing. I was not your typical medical director and I’m probably not your typical consultant. At times I have wondered whether I am doing a good job at all. But it’s so much about presence and obviously that has been thought to be enormously valuable by people.

“I feel lighter than a year ago at the prospect of leaving. No service is dependent on one person, but one wants to go feeling things are left in reasonable shape. It’s now looking very optimistic and hopeful.”

So, what does the future hold for Jeff after his departure at the end of April?

“Death and dying does colour your perspective and it’s now time to rediscover Jeffrey,” he said.

It’s been a year of engagements and weddings for Jeff and Lois’s children. Following the fourth wedding in 9 months in a few weeks’ time, he has a good rest planned, before embarking on his next adventure – ordination as a Church of England priest with the aim of part-time ministry. As a regular churchgoer he says he is “badging up” what he does already, swapping medical care for pastoral care.

Before that Jeff has some sincere thanks to express: “I would like to pay tribute to those I have worked with at St Luke’s, and to thank Steve Statham and George Lillie and the rest of the Senior Management Team. I have always felt enormously supported. It has been humbling and inspiring to work with everyone.”

BLOG: The journey of a donated sofa

How Stuart’s bargain sofa made Sandie smile and boosted our funds for patient care

Around this festive time of year we’re bombarded with TV ads for big name furniture brands, urging us to buy a new sofa or suite in the sales.

In these challenging financial times, choosing a pre-loved option from one of our charity shops not only makes great economic sense, it’s also better for the environment and supports our care for patients and their loved ones.

We followed a three-piece suite, kindly donated to St Luke’s, on its journey to a grateful new home and measured its impact on the charity.

 When Stuart Cann and his wife, Leanne, ordered a brand new sofa suite there was never any doubt about the destination of their old one. They were going to donate it to St Luke’s Plymouth.

Old is actually the wrong word for the elegant, grey four-seater sofa with matching chair and big, circular footstool that used to grace the football-mad family’s lounge. Less than three years old, it was as smart and comfortable as the day it arrived, and already held good memories for the couple and their children Ella, 13, and Thomas, nine.

“I’ve sat there and enjoyed many a beer and takeaway watching the football. And we had a lot of friends round, crammed into the lounge to watch the Euros,” recalled Stuart.

But as part of an extensive renovation programme at their house in Plymstock, they were having a clean sweep and the suite had to go.

“There was nothing wrong with that settee. We could have put it on one of the marketplace apps and got some money for it. But there are people in more need than us and St Luke’s is a deserving charity, so we thought why not donate it so someone can pick up a decent sofa at a much lower cost,” said Stuart. “Plus, I knew St Luke’s was happy to pick up large furniture, so that made it easy for us.”

Although they have no personal link to St Luke’s, Stuart, a mechanical and electrical project manager, and Leanne, who works in HR at Babcock, had heard about the charity’s end of life care. They believe in giving back to the community when they can and have taken on the challenge of several half marathons and other running events to support cancer and dementia charities.

Meanwhile, Sandie was on a mission to find a sofa – and other essential furniture – for the empty new home of friends who were returning to live in Plymouth after working in America.

Trying to stick to a budget, she’d spent the day trawling charity and second-hand shops around Plymouth with no luck at all. She said: “I went in one shop and everything was out of the 1970s. It was awful… I came out so disheartened.”

Sandie was just about to give up hope and drive away empty-handed when she struck gold at St Luke’s large furniture store on Western Approach. Having one more go at her quest to find something good, reasonably priced and in great condition, she popped into the old ToysRUs building.

“I wandered around but didn’t find anything. I was just leaving when I saw two guys walking towards me carrying a sofa and I moved out of the way for them,” said Sandie. “I thought it looked very nice so I followed them through the store and asked if it was for sale. They said yes, they had just brought it in from the back store.”

She knew immediately that it was the one and decided to buy it straight away. “I was absolutely thrilled. I just love it; it’s so comfortable and it’s still a current sofa in the shop it came from. And I knew it could have it within days. If you order one new it’s still a 6-12 week wait before you can have it delivered.”

Sandie was surprised and delighted to discover such a brilliant quality bargain, and in a shop supporting a charity that is dear to her heart. She was happy to learn that the money raised by the sale of the sofa is the equivalent of St Luke’s providing a full package of care and support for a patient and their family at home.

Sandie’s sister, Vanessa was only 50 when she was diagnosed late with Stage 4 cancer and died at St Luke’s specialist care unit at Turnchapel.

“We only had weeks with her left and St Luke’s hospice care and nurses were just amazing – not only for the patient but for us as family members because we are struggling too and they understand that. Nothing was too much bother for them.”

Sandie, who always donates her own unwanted items, said: “Charity shops are not like they used to be. I remember going in with my mum when I was young and it was terrible – full of old people’s stuff and it would smell. I couldn’t bear it. But you go in now and it’s very modern. I was really surprised by the quality when I went in St Luke’s. It’s definitely worth looking in there.”

Sandie isn’t the only one whose is delighted with the new sofa. Doodles – her tiny 12-year-old Yorkipoo – loves it too.

“When the sofa arrived, he came running in and sniffed it from top to bottom; he has now claimed it as his own,” she said. “I’m still helping to get the place sorted for my friends and every time I’m there I make myself a cup of tea, sit down on the sofa and smile.”

Andrew Collins, manager at St Luke’s Western Approach store in the old ToysRUs building, said using St Luke’s is a great way to save money and help the charity.

“Why buy new when you can buy a quality used piece from us? It’s much more affordable and it’s also helps support the care of St Luke’s patients and their families,” he said. “We always need items to sell to generate income for St Luke’s. All we ask is that they are ‘saleable’, so in reasonable condition, and not broken and without any bits missing. And we’re not able to take sofas unless they have got their fire safety regulation labels.”

Remembering lost loved ones in candlelit harmony

Personal reflections on her first St Luke’s Light Up a Life service by St Luke’s Communications Copywriter Jackie Butler.

As Christmas approaches, the classic song reminds us that this should be the “most wonderful time of the year”. Yet, for many of us, the festive season is when the pain of losing a loved one can hurt the most.

Gathering with others in a place of worship to remember and celebrate those we miss can be uniquely comforting, whether you are a regular churchgoer or not, and that’s exactly the opportunity St Luke’s Light Up a Life tradition provided for our local community last Tuesday.

Hundreds flocked to St Andrew’s in Plymouth city centre for three special Christmas remembrance services that were making a welcome return after a three-year absence, and I felt heartened to join the throng.

Preparing to venture out on a bitterly cold evening, I wanted to make sure I’d be toasty warm. Opening the jumper drawer, one very precious item caught my eye – a rich green toasty warm mohair polo-neck, hand-knitted by my mother for herself a year or two before she died. When I put it on, it felt like I was taking her with me, which seemed appropriate, given the occasion.

As I entered St Andrew’s, the whole place looked magical, illuminated by dozens of church candles, and I was handed my own hand-size version, ready for a poignant moment later in the proceedings. Taking a seat near the back, in the pews in front of me were men and women of all ages, some alone, others in groups, but all well-wrapped up in warm, winter coats, sitting side by side in quiet unity.

It began with a procession down the aisle, led by relay runners Paul Griffin and David Matthams who had carried the flaming Olympic-style Light Up a Life torch all the way from St Luke’s at Turnchapel just as they have done for more than 20 years. Members of the St Luke’s nursing team and loyal volunteers walked behind in pairs, carrying flickering candles.

With the original Christmas story at its heart, the thoughtfully crafted programme of words and song that followed acknowledged not only the pain of people’s grief and loss, but also the hope that light in the darkness can bring.

Team vicar Tim Partridge recognised the painful reality of people’s struggles this Christmas, reminding us that “Life is full of tears and it doesn’t get put on hold for Christmas Day.”

St Luke’s CEO Steve Statham welcomed the crowd and reminded us that St Luke’s care doesn’t stop at Christmas and that it’s the generosity of the community keeps the organisation going, year after year.

Loyal volunteers Dazzle Tighe and Adrian Frost stepped up to read a passage from the Bible and a poignant poem about treasuring our memories of people who are special to us. The Tamar Concert Choir performed two exquisite Christmas songs – Oh Holy Night and Christmas Lullaby.

The emotion was almost palpable when it was time for us to light and dedicate our personal candles, retreating into our own private worlds. It was a moment to remember those “we love but no longer see” and feel grateful for the light they brought into our lives. I thought not only of family members and special ones who are no longer with us but also of the dear friends who have lost their life partners recently.

There were prayers and a chance to raise our voices together singing Oh Little Town of Bethlehem, transporting me as if by magic back to school nativity concerts.

But the occasion wasn’t quite over yet. The camaraderie of mutual understanding, forged in the pews, carried on in the church hall, with smiles and chatter, new connections made, and old friendships rekindled, over welcome hot drinks and mince pies.

It felt very special to be part of such a heart-warming occasion that didn’t shy away from sadness but offered the chance to celebrate the memory of our loved ones in a positive and hopeful way.

When compassion comes calling

If you want to learn about the fantastic care delivered day in and day out by St Luke’s, one of the best places to start has to be out on the frontline with our at home nursing teams.

Like many people, I’d been under the impression that St Luke’s was all about the wonderful in-patient unit at Turnchapel. I knew that my friend’s husband had been visited at his own house – where he wanted to take his final days – but it was still a surprise to discover that more than half the care delivered by St Luke’s happens out in the community.

Eager to find out more and part of my induction to St Luke’s, I recently had the privilege of accompanying members of our dedicated at home team on daily rounds in and around Plymouth to witness first-hand what a huge difference this treasured service makes to patients who are facing death, and their families.

For someone like me who isn’t used to being around very poorly people at the end of their lives, this was like jumping in at the deep end and I admit I was a bit nervous. But the reassuring presence of Clinical Nurse Specialist Sally, and Urgent Care team nurse Natasha and health care assistant Claire, put me at ease straight away.

I could imagine the relief you might feel as a patient, a concerned relative or a fellow carer, when these veritable superwomen ring the doorbell. It’s immediately clear that their entire focus is on making things as comfortable as they can in every sense, minimising intrusion, maximising support, easing pain, maintaining people’s dignity – often in difficult circumstances – and helping plan for the best death possible.

Their respectful and unhurried presence suggests they have all the time in the world for each individual and that nothing is too much trouble. Intuitive, gentle and knowledgeable, it was fascinating to see each of them instinctively register the tiniest changes in a patient’s expression or demeanour and then go the extra mile to respond with a practical solution.

I was surprised by the huge patch the at home team covers – some 750 square miles stretching right across the city and across into rural West Devon and remote parts of Dartmoor, as well as down into the South Hams and the coast. And some patients are visited by St Luke’s up to three times a day.

ROUND ONE Sally – Clinical Nurse Specialist

Sally, who retrained as a nurse after a long career in the police force, usually travels solo but certainly made a delightful companion as I tagged along on her rounds for the day. Her intense passion for her job certainly shone brightly.

As a St Luke’s Clinical Nurse Specialist, she has particular skills in managing patients’ complex symptoms and pain, advising on medication options and other aids to make things easier. Her day involves weighing up care and treatment options and encouraging the most beneficial in each case. Like the rest of the at home team, she takes a sharp and holistic view of each patient and their quality of life, and her calls are scheduled to reflect each situation.

Sally’s upbeat manner disguises how acutely tuned in she is to every scenario she’s faced with, including the health and wellbeing of the individuals caring for a patient, whether that is family members, nursing home staff, district nurses, St Luke’s own at home team or a combination of those.

Uppermost in her mind is recognising people’s needs and acknowledging what they are going through. “It’s important to tell people you really understand,” said Sally.

Answers to the casually chatty but clever questions she asks provide the information she needs to make the right judgments about a patient’s condition and the best path to follow. Faced with a man in pain but reluctant to try a stronger painkilling solution, I noted her gentle powers of persuasion in action as she coaxed not only his agreement to “just give it a try”, but a rare little smile as well.

Minutes after checking in on a lady in a local nursing home, she was back in her car and straight on the phone to the woman’s daughter to reassure her that mum was comfortable and without pain, but very close to the end of life.

I also witnessed as she went above and beyond to make sure a patient who was no longer able to take his medication orally had a syringe pump driver and specific drugs prescribed by the GP, all up and running the very same day to avoid him suffering unnecessarily in his final days at home, surrounded by his loved ones.

“You get a real high from getting it right for the family,” she said.

Making notes during and after each visit, Sally had a mountain of paperwork to complete before calling it a day, filing detailed reports on the patients she’d seen so St Luke’s at home team, and other concerned medical professionals, had a detailed view of her observations and care advice.

While she and her fellow Clinical Nurse Specialists are like the expert flying squad of the service, the consistent daily personal care of patients is the domain of the Urgent Care Team, who work in pairs and can clock up hundreds of miles on a 12.5-hour shift, travelling from patient to patient.

ROUND TWO – Claire and Natasha

Nurse Natasha describes the palliative care she and her Urgent Care Team colleagues deliver as they approach death as “a big, warm hug” and that spirit was ever-present as I watched her and health care assistant Claire in action together in people’s homes.

“We are a very passionate team. We want people to have the very best quality care. At St Luke’s if you need to sort someone in crisis then you can spend the time. Someone else is always ready to help,” said Natasha.

Claire added: “We are not trying to make anybody better, just pain-free and comfortable. We specialise in dying and death.”

The day I joined them began with a handover meeting at Turnchapel discussing the patients they would see that morning, their state of health, their needs, issues with medication, and any other agencies involved, like social care or district nurses.

Sitting in the back of one of St Luke’s bright branded vehicles, I experienced a sense of pride as Claire negotiated the traffic to drive us to the first call of the day.  It’s fair to say that health care assistants are the lifeblood of the service and the main faces of St Luke’s care out in the community. As a nurse Natasha is more often taking an overview of patients, assessing new referrals and giving advice on care, but she clearly loves the hands-on aspects of the job, and it was awe-inspiring to watch her and Claire working seamlessly together.

Our first call was to a very weak elderly woman in the final stages of cancer, dozing in the living room of her house where she lived with her husband. Asking permission at every stage, and giving constant reassurance, Claire and Natasha very carefully raised her hospital bed to a manageable height and position. They slowly stripped back her blankets, one by one, making sure she didn’t feel cold, and gave her the gentlest of washes to freshen her up, while watching for signs of pain, discomfort and noting any deterioration since the day before.

They dealt with her catheter bag, moisturised her feet, brushed her hair and teeth. They changed her bedding and nightclothes and propped up her up with pillows so she could see out the window to the garden. When they left the house she was clean, snug and dozing again and they – or another St Luke’s UC team – would be back to do it all again in the early evening.  I sensed it wasn’t going to be long.

Natasha and Claire repeated that level of kindness and care on each of their visits, depending on the individual and their circumstances. En route to the next patient, Claire explained a bit more about what is happening quietly under the surface when they are in someone’s home.

“You read the whole situation holistically. We soak it all up. Quite often it’s the relatives who are struggling the most. Even the dog’s behaviour can give you clues about the situation when you walk in the door,” she said. “We look for all the signs that someone is actively dying. We learn our skills and we are out there doing it. The person you are working with, you just give them a little look and they know what you are thinking.”

When death does arrive, St Luke’s role doesn’t stop, and it was humbling to hear how Claire and her fellow HCAs have a particularly poignant and challenging role to play.

“Ideally everyone would die in their sleep with someone holding their hand. But you can give them the dignity after, and it’s such a privilege to provide that care after death, for the family and the patient themselves,” she said. “We’re there for the practicalities and to talk about what happened.

“Care after death is really important and I like to do it as much as looking after someone when they are alive. To have them looking beautiful or handsome and put on their best clothes, give them a shave, some make up or perfume. It’s the last memory people are going to have of their loved one before they have to let them go, so it’s really important. You like to know that you have done your best.”

After three patients, a quick lunch, report writing and what they call a “huddle” with colleagues, Natasha and Claire were heading back out late afternoon with another set of visits on their list, maybe the same patients, maybe different ones. Every day is different for them.

I retired to my desk to reflect on my experiences with Sally, Claire and Natasha, blown away by the extraordinary compassion and skilled care I’d seen in action on the frontline and so grateful for the opportunity.  There’s still so much more for me to learn about St Luke’s, but I now have a much better insight into why we’re all here, working together to keep these incredible services running.

CEO Steve Statham discusses his retirement and St Luke’s

Chief Executive of St Luke’s, Steve Statham, has announced he will be retiring in April 2023 after six years’ service in the role and 18 years with our charity.

Here he discusses his retirement and time at St Luke’s and how he will be leaving the charity in very capable hands.

There is never a ‘perfect’ time to leave a job and organisation you hold very dear, but both personally and professionally it feels like the right time for me to hand over the reins to a successor who will bring with them their own ideas and leadership style.

The decision to retire next year has not been an easy one – not only because I’m incredibly proud of the service that together we have grown, shaped and honed so that it’s the very best it can be for our patients and their families, but because the St Luke’s team are the best of the best.

If you’ll bear with me, I’m going to repeat a story that I’ve told at many a Welcome Day over the years, and it goes back to when I first set foot inside Turnchapel for my interview as HR Director 18 years ago. If I’m completely honest, it was more about getting interview practice than securing the job itself. After all, I told myself, wouldn’t a hospice be rather a depressing place to work? Of course, I was wrong – something that didn’t take long to dawn on me. And, by the time my interview was over, I really wanted the job!

St Luke’s empathy, compassion and positivity was absolutely palpable that day at Turnchapel, just as it always is there or wherever you come into contact with our staff and volunteers. It’s what inspired me to take the job and progress to the role of Chief Executive (via a few years in the Deputy position), and though it’s hard to describe the special atmosphere to people who’ve never experienced it, it’s what I still feel every single day when I come to work.

Being CEO is not a nine-to-five job, far from it, and that’s exactly what you’d expect. Even when I’m out and about in the evenings and at weekends, there are always people wanting to talk to me about St Luke’s and share their personal stories of the difference our team made to them in the midst of a very tough time. In that sense, as CEO you are always ‘on’, but this has never felt like a burden to me. The attention and feedback from our community is simply testament to how much our staff and volunteers do for these families, always exceeding expectations and leaving them with memories that still bring them comfort, even many years on.

Reflecting on my time at St Luke’s and what I feel proudest of – alongside my colleagues – is the way our organisation has continuously innovated to keep pace with the changing needs of our patients, who always come first. There have been times when we’ve had to make difficult decisions, but it’s this agility and patient-centred approach that has helped us adapt and thrive, maintaining the trust of our community and meeting them at their point of need, wherever they happen to be.

I am also proud of the partnerships we have built and strengthened along the way, including with University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, Marie Curie and Livewell South West, that are so critical to the delivery of seamless care for patients.

While none of us will forget the pandemic in a hurry, so relentless did it feel for us all, what it did for St Luke’s is shine a light on our specialist knowledge and skills in end of life care and bereavement support, which were in demand more than ever before. The way our teams reacted swiftly to help ease the load on our health and social care partners, dealing with huge challenges with such good grace, has been noted throughout our local networks, increasing awareness of, and respect for, what we do.

Even more so than before, they will look to us for their education needs, recognising how valuable our expertise is to them. This is especially heartening given St Lukes’s continued investment in our Education team and its provision for health and social care providers, from GPs to care home staff.

In closing, I want to reassure you that during the next six months before my retirement starts, I will be committed to leading St Luke’s diligently.

I will be leaving our hospice in good shape and in very capable hands. Though it will be very hard to say goodbye in April, it is my trust in our team that gives me complete peace of mind as I plan the next phase of my life.

Travelling…cycling…yes, there’ll be more time to enjoy those, but apart from that I’m remaining open to what retirement may bring. What is certain is that I will take with me huge pride, respect and appreciation for all my colleagues right across St Luke’s our unwavering supporters and fantastic memories of an exceptionally special time.

It was big, it was bold and it turned Dartmoor blue, raising vital funds for our compassionate care.

On Sunday 9 October, over 1,000 cyclists of all ages and abilities proudly donned their branded blue tee-shirts and took to the saddle for our annual cycling challenge, Tour de Moor, in support of the vital care we provide for local families affected by terminal illness.

Located on the rugged wilds of Dartmoor, participants pitted themselves against the toughest, hill-filled terrain for 52km, taking it down a gear for the 30km route or opting for the more gentle, 11km ride along the tarmac paths of Drake’s Trail.

Sponsored by local company Print Copy Scan Ltd, Tour de Moor helps support the specialist services we provide free of charge to our patients, reaching across Plymouth and into rural areas, including Tavistock, Dartmoor and the South Hams.


Among the sea of cyclists were many taking part in tribute to a loved one looked after by St Luke’s at the end of their life.

Taking on the 52km for his second year was Steve from Tavistock “There’s downhills, a lot of uphill’s, the climbs are horrible but when you get to the top at Princetown the views are amazing and it is so rewarding when you get to the finish. This year I am taking in part in memory of my Grandad who died a few weeks ago of cancer. St Luke’s were there from the start of the diagnosis, to treatment and until his passing. I must say St Luke’s were with the family step by step and provided an unbelievable service, you couldn’t ask for a better charity. It was unbelievable”.

Joining him was Steve Hodge from Plymouth “I’m cycling today for a good friend of mine, Matthew Reynolds who had his 50th birthday in late August and died the week after. He had such great care in St Luke’s, they made it more comfortable for him and extended that support to the whole family. It is such a great local charity, getting involved in an event like this is just nice to give something back”.

But it is not all mud, sweat and hills, Tour de Moor also has a more gentle 11km family route along Drakes Trail. Making it a family day out was English folk singer, songwriter Seth Lakeman and his son Morley. Seth cycling in memory of a good friend, said: “It is so important to support a charity like this, St Luke’s have touched people in so many different ways. I can’t imagine a Devon without St Luke’s, the end of life care and what they achieve is almost hard to fathom. I think these sort of moments when you are pushing yourself physically I felt quite emotional crossing the line and thought of those people who aren’t around anymore and how St Luke’s have helped them”.

And, with 2022 marking 40 years since we welcomed our first patients, in 1982, for each and every Tour de Moor participant there was the pride of receiving a special commemorative medal on their completion of the challenge.

St Luke’s Head of Fundraising, Penny Hannah, said: “It was incredibly moving to see so many cyclists turn out in support of our charity’s compassionate care for families going through the toughest of times.

“All our Tour de Moorers should feel incredibly proud because it is their support – and that of everyone who fundraises and volunteers for us – that will help us keep doing what we do for the next 40 years and beyond. Huge thanks to everyone who took part in this year’s challenge, our volunteers, Dartmoor National Park, Maristow Estate, David May Motor Service’s, The Hire Shop, Appleby Westward and Rapid Relief Plymouth all for whom we could not put on an event of this scale. You have done your community proud!”

Volunteers’ Week, 1 – 7 June

Three big cheers for our hospice volunteers!

What better time than national Volunteers’ Week to shine a light on the local heroes who so generously give our charity their time and skills for free? Together with our staff, our volunteers help make our community a kinder place for people with terminal illness or experiencing bereavement.

While we’re proud of them all year round, this week is a special celebration of these big-hearted individuals. After all, as a charity we simply couldn’t do as much as we do, as well as we do it, without the vital contribution they make.

Monkey Volunteers Week

Paul ‘Monkey’ Wade brims over with enthusiasm talking about volunteering as part of our Events team for the past eight years. A familiar face at Tour de Moor, Midnight Walk and Men’s Day Out, Paul loves being in the great outdoors, whether it’s marshalling or putting up the signs along the route, to help keeping everything running smoothly. Paul, from Kings Tamerton, said: “If I volunteered at every St Luke’s event for the rest of my life, I still couldn’t repay all the kindness given when the hospice cared for my beautiful mum, Caroline, before she died.”

For many of our charity shop customers – particularly those who’ve been bereaved or are feeling isolated – our stores are a place where they find compassion as well as quality bargains. Likewise, gaining a sense of connection appeals to our volunteers, too. It’s what inspired Eleanor Richardson to get involved, first on reception at Turnchapel and now a day a week at our Shabby Chic charity shop on the Barbican, where we sell vintage treasure.

Eleanor Volunteers Week

Eleanor, who lives in Oreston, arrived in Plymouth after spending most of her life in South Africa. She said: “Living alone and adapting to life in a new country felt daunting, so being welcomed into the St Luke’s family was just what I needed. Becoming a volunteer is such a great way of meeting people as well as contributing to something really worthwhile. I love serving our customers and can honestly say I get far more from volunteering than I give.”

For John Horwell of Down Thomas, helping to keep our Turnchapel grounds neat and tidy as part of our maintenance team is his way of thanking us for caring so well for his beloved wife Margaret before sadly, she died. John said: “It comforts me to be giving something back. When I see families arriving, my heart goes out to them because I relate to what they are going through, but I know that with St Luke’s they are in the very best of hands.”

John Volunteers Week

Kindness is powerful, especially for people who are terminally ill or grieving, so we are hugely grateful to our warm-hearted befrienders and bereavement support volunteers, too.

Mary Burroughs, who lives in Yelverton, spent all her working life in senior administrative roles in healthcare organisations, including Guy’s Hospital in London and University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. As a volunteer with us, she gives an hour a week to listen to and support people whose loved one was looked after by St Luke’s.

She said: “You might assume listening to people who are grieving is depressing, but I don’t see it like that at all. Of course, there’s sadness because someone they love has died, but I regard it as an honour that they share their story with me and can be open about how they’re feeling.

“It’s all part of them gradually coming to terms with their loss and adapting to a new way of being. When someone says I’ve made a difference to them, it really touches my heart.”
